Grace Jones Is Back Like A "Hurricane"

Grace Jones at the Clyde Auditorium, Glasgow - review

A hypnotic 60-year-old Grace Jones performed new, fuller, rounder and richer songs at her comeback tour in Glasgow.

Grace Jones waited 19 years before releasing 2008's Hurricane. The recent ubiquity of single William's Blood shows she can still turn out a radio monster when she has to, but she now faces the sterner test of a major comeback tour.

The predominantly middle-aged Glasgow crowd had dressed pin-sharp for the style icon's return, but initially stayed quiet, and it looked as though the 60-year-old Jones had asked too much of herself.

She looked a diminished presence, but then in second song This Is she stepped down from her podium and strode the width of the stage, turning her face full to the crowd. Her eyes flashed a savage light and she sang the words through a tooth-baring grimace. Handfuls of multicoloured glitter gave angular, gritty glamour to her face as she glowered at the crowd.

The hall that had seemed so cavernous, cold and quiet a minute ago suddenly shrank in size. Grace Jones had declared her possession of the place and everyone in it.

It was a moment that showed the urgent power of a born performer, and there were more to come. Also to come was empty musical filler, but this was quickly forgotten in Jones's wild glare.

Each song brought a costume change, and the metallic red plate that stuck to her forehead for Demolition Man made a trinity with the two cymbals she smashed gleefully together, her statue-stance and the symmetry of the poses adding demonic weight to a funny, self-aware tirade.

Later she donned a spangly hat that became a glitter ball under a spotlight, then a hula hoop which she spun throughout an extended Slave To The Rhythm.

The new songs sounded fuller, rounder and richer than the old, but nothing sounded like William's Blood. Jones's strong, controlled voice gathered velvety gospel rasp in the snaking melodies of the song's verse, and the angelic pre-chorus soared.

The chorus, though, hit like a physical force. Guitars burst into distorted squawl and there stood Jones centre stage, her dominating presence reaching deep into the hall, her body grinding and bumping and stomping to the music's malicious thump. Then, as quickly as it had come, the moment floated away and the song dissolved into blissed-out rave. It was breath-shorteningly exciting.

This was not about the music, which periodically sagged, or the costumes, or the dancing, or her still-iconic posturing. It was about Jones's incredible alchemy, which delivered flashing moments of sensory delight: fleeting, powerful and unique.

It is so cool to see one of my favorite all time entertainers back bigtime. I have been a Grace Jones fan ever since I first heard "Pull Up To The Bumper" back in the day. Grace is one of those souls that is going to be her, like it or not. Too bad there are not more souls of that nature. I can't wait for her to come around this part of the world so I can check her live show out. In the meantime, I am posting two videos off the newest album. Enjoy!

The Furry Freak Brothers & Fat Freddy's Cat

There is so much "serious" crap going on on the planet these days, I figured we needed a comedic break. What better way to "chill", than the "Furry Freak Brothers & Fat Freddy's Cat". For those of YOU that were not "hip" enough to be into these legends, or, to young, read the following and then watch the video. Enjoy!

Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers

The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers are a trio of
underground comic strip characters created by the U.S. artist Gilbert Shelton. Their first comic book appearance was in Feds 'n' Heads, published by Berkeley's Print Mint in 1968. In 1969 Shelton and three friends from Texas founded Rip Off Press in San Francisco, which took over publication of all subsequent Freak Brothers comix. The first compilation of their adventures, The Collected Adventures of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, had its first printing in 1971 and has been continually in print ever since. In addition to underground and college weekly newspapers, new adventures appeared in magazines such as Playboy , High Times, and Rip Off Comix; these too were collected in comic book form. Shelton continued to write the series until 1992, in collaboration with Dave Sheridan (1974-1982) and Paul Mavrides (since 1978). The work enjoys a sizable cult following, and the magazines are widely available in comic stores.

While most underground comix are humorous, the Freak Brothers live a slapstick existence reminiscent of the best silent comedies. Their entire lives rotate around the procurement and enjoyment of recreational drugs, particularly
marijuana. None of them have the slightest concern about gainful employment, and the only use for money is to procure some food and lots of drugs without getting "burned" by unscrupulous dealers or busted by the police. Other storylines include "Fat Freddie's Cat" and a military empire of cockroaches in the kitchen. The stories often satirize the establishment and right-wing politics. For a counterculture production, the standard of artwork is exceptionally high; Shelton's striving for accuracy and attention to detail have earned him comparisons with Hergé.

The majority of the titles in the series consist of one or more multi-page stories together with a number of one-page strips. Many of the latter have a one-row skit featuring
Fat Freddy's Cat at the bottom of the page. Some of the titles also contain a small number of strips featuring completely unrelated characters.

The comic is currently being adapted into a movie using
stop-motion animated rubber figurines.

I don't know about where YOU live, but, where I live, the local newspaper has become pretty much a non entity as far as content. Especially covering national and international news. In order to stay on top of "global events", YOU have to have the latest from around the planet. I am listing a couple of cool sites that I get a wealth of info from. Hope YOU enjoy, and, if YOU have any intersting news outlets, let me know.

Robert Plant, "No Zeppelin Tour For Me"

Plant Suggests He's Too Old for Zeppelin Reunion

Robert Plant has completely ruled out getting back together with
Led Zeppelin for a concert tour. In a rare live interview, the singer, 60, suggested to BBC Radio Wales this weekend that he has gotten too old for lengthy hard rock shows and has moved on to other things.

"I'm doing very well with Alison [Krauss], and I'm enjoying that," Plant said, while confessing that he still kept in touch regularly with Jimmy Page.

"I still see Jimmy quite a lot and he's very complimentary and supportive of what I'm doing," Page said about the Zeppelin guitarist. "But we are in different places now, and you have to go on to do different things.

"When asked directly about the likelihood of a Led Zep reunion, Plant joked of being too old. "Do you know how long it took me to climb up onto the stage here? And it's only four steps!"

I was really looking forward to a Led Zeppelin Tour with all the remaining members. Does not look like it will happen though. Oh well. Hey, I'll settle for an album!
