MySpace's new CEO promises innovation

CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) - The new leaders of News Corp. (NWS) (NWSA)'s MySpace said Wednesday they need to innovate to rejuvenate the social networking site, which has suffered from stalled user growth.

Owen Van Natta didn't detail specifics but indicated that the ability to make changes to the site was a reason he took the job of MySpace chief executive last month.

"When I look at MySpace there's just so much opportunity to build," Van Natta said at The Wall Street Journal's D: All Things Digital conference. "I took the job because there's a lot more that can be done around innovation."

Though praised for its substantial entertainment content, MySpace has been criticized for falling behind rival Facebook when it comes to technology. Its worldwide user base has also stagnated at about 130 million, compared with Facebook's 200 million.

"Certainly we're not the darling of the press right now, I think that's pretty clear," he said.

Van Natta, a former Facebook executive, said success would require trial and error, with failures along the way. He said it's starting from a strong place with millions of users.

MySpace, based in Beverly Hills, Calif., has distinguished itself from Facebook by allowing users to be "super-creative" in designing their pages, Van Natta said.

"I'm a big believer in personalization," he said. "Our job is to make MySpace really, really great for everybody, and that means that the experience has to be different for everybody."

Van Natta fielded questions for nearly an hour with Jonathan Miller, a former chief executive at AOL who was recently named chief digital officer of News Corp., the New York-based media conglomerate that also owns the Journal.

Miller acknowledged Facebook is a rival but that the growth in social networking leaves plenty of room for both.

"Yes, I think Facebook is a competitor but it's also fine to have competitors," Miller said. "I don't think it's going to be a winner-take-all game at all."

A substantial amount of MySpace's revenue comes from a $900 million, three-year ad-sharing deal it began with Internet search leader Google Inc. (GOOG) (GOOG) in 2007. That deal expires in August 2010.

Miller said a new agreement with Google might involve other News Corp. Web sites.

Terminator: Salvation & District 9

Went to see the new "Terminator" movie on Thursday night. It was really good for what it is. An action, violent, shoot 'em up trip. They did a great job with the effects and action sequences. It was "edge of your seat" pacing for the most part. I would go and see it again! I will give it 3 stars for the action and entertainment.

One of the previews we saw, which I am chomping at the bit for this movie to come out, is "District 9". It has a Halo and Lord Of The Rings connect. Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp.Check out the video/trailer. This could be a summer sleeper.

"NEW" Crystal Method CD

Being one of my favorite artist, I had to do a blog post for their "NEW" disc. This video/track is from the "Divided By Night" cd from The Crystal Method. This was the first single and video featuring artist "Matisyahu". The song is "Drown In The Now".

I will be checking them out at the House Of Blues in Orlando on May 15, 2009. Can't wait to hear the new stuff along with their classics. Enjoy!

iPhone, My Phone

It has been one month now since I got my "iPhone." It is one of the greatest gadgets humans have ever come up with! No wonder everyone that has one is thrilled to the max. This thing is a phone, a laptop, a camera, a gps device and more all rolled into one. AND, it is easy to use and learn! In a month, I have NOT even opened the users manual yet. I have pretty much figured out stuff on my own or, from people I know that have them.

A couple of things that I have heard grumblings about are: the camera cannot zoom, nor does it have a flash. It also does not shoot video. However, that will be corrected very soon I am told. The one thing I would like corrected is, "not being able to watch some video etc. because the phone is not "flash" compatible. Hopefully, that will be addressed soon also.

Cost wise, if YOU do a 2 year contract with AT&T, it cost YOU about $200 for the phone and $30 a month(on top of your calling plan)for the whole wireless 3G experience. Just cancel your newspaper subscription and YOU have the $30. Plus, YOU can get all your news online as it happens instead of waiting for the paper.

There are other touch screen phones out there, but, as Hammer would say, they "can't touch this"!

Carlos Santana Tells Obama To Legalize Pot

Well, it's not quite 4/20, but why not? Carlos Santana is calling for President Obama to make pot legal. During a junket to promote his upcoming residency at Las Vegas' Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, the legendary guitarist asked the president to give it serious consideration.

"Legalize marijuana and take all that money and invest it in teachers and in education," Santana told the Huffington Post. "You will see a transformation in America."

Santana said making weed legal is "really way overdue, like the prohibition with the alcohol and stuff like that," adding, "I really believe that as soon as we legalize and decriminalize marijuana we can actually afford a really good governor who won't keep taking money away from education and from teachers and send him back to Hollywood where he can do 'D' movies and we can get an 'A' governor." Santana was, of course, referring to former movie action hero and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Santana's remarks were in response to a question about legalization that were raised to Obama during his online town hall on March 26. At the time Obama fielded a question about whether legalization of the illicit drug would help pull the nation out of recession. Obama said he didn't think it was good economic policy, and also joked: "I don't know what this says about the online audience."

I have been saying for years and years, "LEGALIZE IT". Stop listening to these idiots out here with their limp "gateway drug" argument against it. Herb is no worse than alcohol, beer, and over the counter or script drugs. If Obama doesn't do it, someone will sooner than later.

Resident Evil 5 Video Game Review

For all the gamers out there, "Resident Evil 5" has dropped and is off and running. My son Sean, has been playing the game on the PS 3 all day today and rates it 7.5 out of 10.
